More News On Anglican Re-Unification: No Longer Hypothetical, It’s Happening Now

There’s been a great deal of news about the Anglican Catholic movement’s return to full communion with the Church since I commented on Deacon Keith Fournier’s editorial at Catholic Online, and some very definite interest in the subject. In fact, it’s not just American Anglicans, but Anglicans around the world. So, here’s a quick digest of some of the news, from Catholic Online:

Cardinal Levada Explains Ecumenism and the Anglican Ordinariates (Zenit News Agency)

Editorial: More Anglicans Say Yes to Full Communion: The Restoration of the Church. (Deacon Keith Fournier, Catholic Online)

Bishop Elliott Explains the Anglican Ordinariate: ‘United in Communion But Not Absorbed’ (Deacon Keith Fournier, Catholic Online)

Here Come the Anglicans: Opening Chapter in the Coming Reunion of the Church. (Deacon Keith Fournier, Catholic Online)

Church Closer To Re-Unifying With Anglicans In America?

Deacon Keith Fournier is one of my favorites in all the clergy. He used to publish a column in The Catholic Virginian, the diocesan paper for the Diocese of Richmond, Va. He stopped writing for it and I lost track of him. Then, one day, he appeared at a church I attend for daily Mass (not my parish). As it turns out, he had moved to Richmond from the eastern part of the diocese for a year or two while commuting to Washington, D.C., to finish his Ph.D. those months were a blessing. His departure, a blow. But I learned I could continue to follow him through Catholic Online, one of the, if not the, best Web site for Catholic news and editorial comment.

Today, he unleashes a heartfelt editorial of optimism and grace on the very real possibility of the first steps toward the end of the Anglican split with the Church. News first arose of this in October (see our comment here) and continued for a while, then seemed to disappear. But now, there is actual movement toward establishing an Anglican ordinariate in America. Australia may follow very soon, as well.

Of course, Episcopals have moved into the Church here and there for a while. In August, 10 Episcopal nuns and a priest took steps to come into full communion with the Church. But with the release by Cardinal William Levada, of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Pope Benedict XVI of the historic Anglicanorum Coetibus, (Latin for “concerning groups of Anglicans”) last November, the stage is set for some 400,000 Anglicans to come into full communion with the Church.

As Deacon Fournier suggests, this has upset some traditional Catholics. It shouldn’t. He, as I, are pleased the Holy Spirit is working through the successor of Peter, Pope Benedict, to reunify the Holy Catholic Church. As the Deacon writes, a Church recovering from the scars of disunity can do so much to arrest the cultural and moral decline of the world. With Pope Benedict and many earnest leaders of the Eastern Orthodox Church in dialogue, we must pray for that schism to be repaired as well.

As for the concerns of some, as long as the new ordinariate — which would be a rite within the universal Church, as certain Eastern rites are — accepts the teachings of the Church’s orthodoxy, there should be no cause for concern. The new Anglican rite would be structured like the Maronite or Maronite, which have patriarchs in Lebanon, but parishes all over the world as Lebanese emigrate, and which are loyal to Rome. Going to a Mass there, for example, fulfills one’s Sunday obligation.

Read Deacon Fournier’s editorial (”More Anglicans say Yes to Full Communion: The Restoration of the Church“) of hope and praise for the wonders of the Holy Spirit and the good it is working through those whose heartfelt desire is to come home to the One, True, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Let us know what you think.

Rhode Island Governor Defends Bishop Tobin!

Ever since U.S. Representative Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) (see A Catholic View) made public the private discourse between he and Bishop Thomas Tobin, of the Diocese of Providence, R.I., the mainstream media has had a field day, snidely belittling the Bishop and any clergy, for that matter, who stands up against abortion, especially the abortion-on-demand and conscious clause removals from the current health care “reform” legislation now in Congress. One rare fair interview was with Bill O’Reilly on the Fox News Channel (see previous post and video, here).

Now the media is after Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri, a rare New England Republican, because he had the audacity to voice his support for his Bishop rather than his congressman (see LifeSiteNews.com). In a local radio interview Governor Carcieri said (from the Providence Journal):

“I think the Bishop had no choice … because if you go back to how this all started, it was basically Congressman Kennedy making pretty outrageous statements about the Catholic Church” and the church’s position on “protecting the sanctity of innocent human beings. So I think the bishop had no choice except to come back and defend the church, which I think he did very well.”

Good on the governor! Perhaps more refreshing than the Bishop himself, who does not have a political class to appease, Governor Carcieri had no fear, despite an electorate much to the left of him on this issue. A real profile in courage. It shows that confidence in the courage of one’s convictions, convictions grounded in the Truth, will serve you well in the long run. Even in the short run. (See Deacon Keith Fournier’s commentary at Catholic Online.) So far, there seems to have been no backlash on the governor. Right now, the Bishop and the governor are standing tall.

Bishop Tobin’s Interview With Bill O’Reilly

Last night, Bishop Thomas Tobin of the Diocese of Providence, R.I., appeared on The O’Reilly Factor on the Fox News Channel to dispel myths and misstatements about his role as Bishop in dealing with Church Scandal — that is, the misrepresentation of Church Teaching by one who claims to be of the Faithful. In this case, that someone is a public and powerful person, U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) (see Yahoo! News), who publicly claims it is fine to be pro-abortion-on-demand and be a Catholic in good standing.

Something new to me in watching the interview is that Bishop Tobin is the author of the new book, Effective Faith. I hope to have more on this in the near future. The interview itself was excellent. Bill O’Reilly was thorough in his questions and effectively took the opposing angle. Bishop Tobin’s responses regardig why Rep. Kennedy should not receive Holy Communion were grounded in the Truth, so it was no surprise he was unruffled, firm and unapologetic, while laying out the Church’s teachings cogently, logically and theologically precise.

In addition to the interview, below, here is a link to its coverage on WPRI-TV/12 in Rhode Island. Also, Bishop Tobin was a recent guest on Hardball With Chris Matthews on MSNBC. Matthews was utterly offensive and disrespectful and Deacon Keith Fournier of Catholic Online calls for his firing.

Here’s the interview. Let me know what you think of it.

Bishop Thomas Tobin honesty and steadfastness for the Truth was a natural on the “no spin zone” last night.

Bishop Martino Needs Our Prayers

Bishop Joseph Martino, Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton, has asked for and received retirement status from Pope Benedict XVI. The diocese now is under the administration of Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, until a successor is named.

We hope and pray for Bishop Martino’s health, that he may be restored to the zeal he has had in defending the Word against the dictatorship of relativism. He has been one of the leading defenders of the Faith and its teachings in an increasingly secular world.

Deacon Keith Fournier has a beautiful tribute to Bishop Martino at Catholic Online. An excerpt:

I also thought of the painful defense St. Paul was forced to give of his own apostolic office in his second letter to the Corinthians (See, 2 Cor. Chapters 10 – 13). It has happened many times in our 2000 year history. Good Bishops like Bishop Joseph Martino sometimes suffer the effects that can accompany “bearing the burden” of their exercise of their apostolic office and have to take a different role in caring for the flock. He is now doing just that with the kind of fidelity, dignity and extraordinary courage he has always shown. However, he is obviously tired,in fact exhausted, from the burden of his office.

Not only do we need to pray for Bishop Martino, but that all Bishops and priests will find the zeal to bring the Word into all homes, to all people. Still more, we need to pray that the Holy Spirit raises up legions of holy men to the priesthood to help lead our society into a culture of life and Biblical values through the Truth and Light.

The New Vietnam War: Priests Attacked In Communist Vietnam

Posted in Issues by Brother Stephen

Despite the promises of the ”new face of communism” in countries such as China and Vietnam, where freedoms allegedly are granted and the societies gradually gain freedom, communism remains the same ideological dictatorship as it ever was, no matter the country, no matter the so-called modernization of it. Deacon Keith Fournier, of the Diocese of Richmond, Va., has written a piece for Catholic Online (Catholic.org)  that documents the absolute oppression of Catholic priests in Vietnam — physical attacks, arrests and mock trials leading to imprisonment or worse. Yet, our government and the international community does nothing, and even warms up relations with this dictatorship.

Deacon Fournier writes that this hostility is the “New Vietnam War,” but that this “Christianphobia” manifests itself in the West as well — including America — in the anti-life and anti-family movements, as well as in physically dangerous situations in the Middle East and Asia:

“Christianophobia” is a word coined by the Holy See to explain this growing anti-Christian sentiment in our age. It is spreading in the European community, in America and throughout the entire world. It is now showing its violent propensities in Vietnam. …

Over the last few years we have witnessed the evil inflicted against Christians in Iraq, the anti-Christian hostility spreading throughout the entire Middle East, the attacks against Christians in Asia and, in particular, the deadly violence in India. We have seen this evil “Christianophobia” spread into countless other places through the less blatant but still insidious anti-Christian ideology fueling so much of the anti-life, anti-family and anti- freedom ideologies of the declining West.

Sadly, we did not rise up the way we could or should when our brethren were attacked in Iraq. Nor did we act when they killed our brethren in India! We have done little to truly expose the dangers faced by Christians in the land where Jesus walked. In short, we Christians have failed in our watch.

We have another chance now. Ironically it comes in the Nation which so many of us, particularly Americans, still remember with regret, no matter which “side” of the failed Vietnam War we stood on, the Nation of Vietnam. That was then and this is now. There is a new Vietnam War being waged. They are attacking Catholic priests and seeking to silence the voice of authentic liberation, the Catholic Church. We must not fail this time.

Indeed, fail we must not. Pray we must. We also must not be afraid to educate our fellow citizens, Catholic and otherwise, including our elected representatives in Washington, to stand up to this persecution of priests in Vietnam.
