Yesterday was the Feast of two great saints. One, Saint John of the Cross (see DoctorsoftheCatholicChurch.com) is better known and it was his feast celebrated on the Latin Rite calendar. Also, yesterday, celebrated in the Eastern Rite, specifically, the Maronite Rite (see MaroniteMonks.org), was the feast of my ancestor, Saint Nimatullah Kassab Al-Hardini (Hardini.org), a Lebanese Maronite monk who was the mentor to the best known Lebanese Maronite Saint, Saint Charbel, whose Feast is celebrated in the Latin Rite in July (see Catholic Online).

Saint Nimatullah (1808-1858) was known for many things (see Eparchy of Saint Maron). He was an efficient administrator, a scholarly teacher and a devout priest. He was especially noted for his love of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Blessed Sacrament (see Vatican biography). He spent many hours in Eucharistic Adoration, often at the expense of sleep, kneeling in the chapel, arms raised cross-like and eyes trained on the tabernacle (see LebaneseSaints.com). Although there are photographs of him, the image below is the most famous one, and was used at his canonization, and honors his devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.

There is volumes of information on Saint Nimatullah and other Maronite Saints. He lived an extradordinary life as a monk and was widely regarded from the Middle East to Rome, and was given great responsibilities. However, when the opportunity came to move to safer quarters at the outset of war, he remained, to look after those in need.

I could go on, but who better than John Paul The Great to speak of him? Saint Nimatullah was one in the last group of saints canonized by John Paul, on May 16, 2004.

Said the His Holiness about Saint Nimatullah:

A man of prayer, in love with the Eucharist which he adored for long periods, Saint Nimatullah Kassab Al-Hardini is an example for the monks of the Order of Lebanese Maronites as he is for his Lebanese brothers and sisters and all Christians of the world. He gave himself completely to the Lord in a life full of great sacrifices, showing that God’s love is the only true source of joy and happiness for man. He committed himself to searching for and following Christ, his Master and Lord.

Welcoming his brothers, he reassured and healed many wounds in the hearts of his contemporaries, witnessing to God’s mercy. May his example enlighten our journey and bring forth, especially in young people, a true desire for God and for holiness to proclaim to our world the light of the Gospel!

Devout to the Blessed Sacrament, in his love for the Lord and for the Church, Saint Nimatullah is a role model in many respects.

The liturgical calendar of the Maronite Rite, one of the Eastern Catholic Rites loyal to Rome, today celebrated the Revelation of Saint Joseph which prompted his determination to do God’s will on Earth. It is one of several such Sunday’s in Advent that the Maronites use to illustrate the preparation we must undertake to welcome the Lord.

Joseph’s role, of course, was the ultimate preparation for the Lord. Engaged to Mary, yet suddenly aware of her pregnancy, this humble man wanted to do what he could to save her blushes and quietly let her be. Yet the Lord explained to him why she was with child and who the child was. As we would say today, Joseph answered the call. He answered it with the ultimate selflessness, giving up a life he expected, to accept the responsibility of an entirely unexpected and unknown life, one surely he must have had some human trembling over. (I once was entrusted to coach a young phenom soccer player. Was I up to it? Imagine the doubts Joseph must have had in knowing he would raise our Saviour.)

But he did it because God asked. What don’t we do that God asks? What life plans do we change to accomodate God’s will? Do we give up a game or event we want to attend and instead attend Mass on a Holy Day of Obligation? Do we set aside some extra money for the needy or Church instead of the latest electronic gadget? Do we encourage those away from the Church to come back or excuse their attitude as, “it’s their life, it’s their choice.”

What are we willing to give up for God, in preparation for His Son? What are we are we willing to do for His will on Earth?

Saint Joseph deferred his life for God. Are we willing even to defer one activity, one television show, one possession?

Ever since U.S. Representative Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) (see A Catholic View) made public the private discourse between he and Bishop Thomas Tobin, of the Diocese of Providence, R.I., the mainstream media has had a field day, snidely belittling the Bishop and any clergy, for that matter, who stands up against abortion, especially the abortion-on-demand and conscious clause removals from the current health care “reform” legislation now in Congress. One rare fair interview was with Bill O’Reilly on the Fox News Channel (see previous post and video, here).   

Now the media is after Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri, a rare New England Republican, because he had the audacity to voice his support for his Bishop rather than his congressman (see LifeSiteNews.com). In a local radio interview Governor Carcieri said (from the Providence Journal):

“I think the Bishop had no choice … because if you go back to how this all started, it was basically Congressman Kennedy making pretty outrageous statements about the Catholic Church” and the church’s position on “protecting the sanctity of innocent human beings. So I think the bishop had no choice except to come back and defend the church, which I think he did very well.” 

Good on the governor! Perhaps more refreshing than the Bishop himself, who does not have a political class to appease, Governor Carcieri had no fear, despite an electorate much to the left of him on this issue. A real profile in courage. It shows that confidence in the courage of one’s convictions, convictions grounded in the Truth, will serve you well in the long run. Even in the short run. (See Deacon Keith Fournier’s commentary at Catholic Online.) So far, there seems to have been no backlash on the governor. Right now, the Bishop and the governor are standing tall.

Ben Stein is one of my favorites. The man who stole the show in ’80s movie classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (the teacher who repeated in his monotone, “Bueller? Bueller?”) and constant TV ad pitchman truly is a Renaissance man: actor, writer, presidential advisor, comic, securities lawyer, economist, professor, conservative thinker and pro-life supporter, among many other things, and an incredibly smart man. So smart, in fact, he even hosted his own game show in the late 1990s called Win Ben Stein’s Money, where winning contestants won his paycheck for each show in which they answered more questions correctly than he. That’s how confidently intelligent Mr. Stein is.

Once, Mr. Stein lost, in part, by getting the meaning of The Immaculate Conception wrong (see Jennifer Hartline of Catholic Online). He was adamant that the Holy Day celebrated the conception of Christ into the Blessed Virgin Mary’s womb. He’s not alone. Most non-Christians, protestants and Catholics themselves think this. I’ve even had Catholics tell me tell me they were taught this in their formation! What else could it mean, after all, if Jesus was conceived not by man and woman but by the Holy Spirit through Mary? Ask most any Catholic and they will tell you this feast day celebrates the Lord’s conception.

For those who attended Mass yesterday, you should know. Still, it is important that we, as Catholics, understand what the Feast Day is about so as to not let misunderstandings undermine the Faith from within — Catholics trying to explain something to non-Catholics that isn’t correct to begin with — and to correct those misunderstandings by those of other faiths who think they know what we believe, and use this incorrect understanding in an attempt to misguide others about Catholicism.

In short, the Feast of The Immaculate Conception (see Catholic Encyclopedia) is the belief that in order for Christ to come into the world, He of no sin, would have to born without original sin. For that to happen, his parents would have to be free of original sin. God, the Father, of course is, but his human mother would have to be as well. Thus, Mary, at her conception and birth, was blessed by God to have been born without original sin, the only human to be born so.

That is the Feast of The Immaculate Conception. Next question, Ben.

Now this is very interesting and shows events do come full circle. It seems there is a prominent protestant who is fighting what he calls the “Prosperity Gospel” — something he says certain evangelicals preach.

When I first read this, it reminded me of watching Pat Robertson some years ago as he pitched for donations. He would tell his viewers that if they donated to him (or, presumably, to their church) God would reward them, and often read letters from people who claimed that after having sent him money they could not afford, some good fortune happened upon them, Praise God!, and it more than made up for what they thought they couldn’t afford to donate.

My next thought was that it was about those preachers who live the high lifestyle and make no apology for it, that the Bible makes provision for prosperity be you clergy or lay.

It’s sort of the former, actually. Here is what J. Lee Grady told Christianity Today, via Matt Friedeman’s post on the American Family Association’s Rightly Concerned Blog.

J.Lee Grady didn’t wait for an economic recession to battle the prosperity gospel. He has been fighting it for years.

Grady is the editor of Charisma, the magazine that serves as a gathering tent for Pentecostal and charismatic Christians. Its columns and advertisements feature some of the most prominent names in the movement — and some of the most frequent targets of Grady’s criticism.

“I don’t want to lump all of those people and everything they teach under the umbrella of indulgences,” Grady says. “But if they’re doing manipulative things to get people to open their wallets, and twisting Scripture just like it was done during medieval times, we ought to challenge that. All we know to do is to get on the housetops and shout for reform.”

Other evangelicals have long criticized the teaching that God promises his followers wealth and happiness. But few within the movement have made their calls for repentance so public.

“Martin Luther had to say something, or they were going to keep selling indulgences. Now we have that going on in our midst,” Grady told Christianity Today in his Orlando office. “If someone says, ‘Send your $100 to be saved,’ that is selling indulgences, and there are people doing that on Trinity Broadcasting Network.” The TV corporation’s fundraising appeals have been among Grady’s most frequent targets.

A leading protestant mind calling out ministers for selling indulgences? Wow! That is one way to look at it. You never know where you may get some intellectual support for an argument. In the case of Catholic Apologetics, we may have an unusual ally in Mr. Grady.

Okay, I admit, I’m pulling strings today. I write about Saint Francis Xavier because it’s my birthday and it’s his feast day. A nice coincidence that makes my birthday ever more special.

Saint Francis Xavier is a special saint in the way that so many are: He sacrifically gave up an easy life to do the Lord’s work. Born in a family castle in the Basque region of Spain in 1506, he nonetheless became a priest and was one of the seven founders of the Society of Jesus.

But he is most known for traveling the world over — not easy in those days, especially when the world was just getting discovered — including India, Asia, Africa and the Phillipines and converted tens of thousands to Christianity. In many ways, his impact on the universality of the Church remains with us. He truly took heed of Jesus’ command to go to the ends of the Earth!

In our comparitively easy lives, do we even approach one person who could use the Lord in their life? Especially this time of year, when people are open to learning about our Lord’s birth on Earth, if only for secular reasons or the obligatory twice a year attendance at Mass, maybe it’s a time we can all ponder as to how to bring more people into the Church  and to Christ.

Saint Francis Xavier gave up life in a castle to bring tens of thousands to Christ.

Every Sunday at Mass, whether we realize it or not, we pray for the unity of the Church. It’s something we should all keep in mind to do on our own. That, for example, there is a split between the Vatican and the Eastern Orthodox surely brings sadness to the Holy Trinity.

Today, however, brings great news! Although it won’t happen before Christmas, and maybe not for a long time still, a potential breakthrough was made in reunification efforts between Catholics and Orthodox.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I said the presence of a Vatican delegation in Istanbul, “confirms the desire to eliminate the impediments accumulated in the course of a millennium to attain the fullness of communion.” (ZENIT via Catholic Online.)

Along with Pope Benedict’s recent overture to traditional Episcopal and Anglican churches and dioceses, there is hope that people of great faith, who perhaps because of human failings throughout the ages, manipulated by the circumstances of their day, were split apart, now have re-unification in one Holy Catholic Church within sight.

Just as Angels greeted the shepherds with news of great joy on the day of our Saviour’s birth, we have our own great news in our day. What a perfect and appropriate season to hear it.

The head of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl, is known for his behind the scenes pragmatism. He is not one for the limelight. But recently, in light of the D.C. City Council’s aggressive moves toward legalizing same-sex marriage, the Archbishop has publicly upped the ante as reported in today’s Washington Post.

His stand for the Word of God has caused some discomfort in the District’s Catholic community. Those upset are in two camps: Those who call themselves Catholic but don’t subscribe to the Church’s teachings and those who just can’t believe an American bishop won’t pull the liberal go-along line. After all, American bishops are supposed to support liberal social justice measures but stay quiet on abortion and marriage. They are shocked!

Of course, as written here before, the U.S. Bishops, unfortunately, are a bit naive. They play to the liberal social justice crowd and can’t understand why those types turn on them when they stand up for Biblical teachings. But, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, and now the liberals are upset that Archbishop Wuerl has told D.C. that if it legalizes same-sex marriage, Catholic Charities will put the breaks on its services in the city.

Unfortunately, the city council did vote 11-2 today to legalize homosexual marriage (see Post again, here). It is the first of two votes needed, but final passage and Mayor Adrian Fenty’s signature appear all but guaranteed.

There is some good news, however, in the culture war, according to the Washington Times. After Maine voters rejected homosexual marriage during last month’s elections, the New Jersey and New York legislatures have slowed down their marches to destroy the meaning of marriage.
